The 3 things you SHOULD know about petrol in diesel!

Marine Fuel Drains

If you find there is the incorrect fuel, or even contaminated fuel (most usually water contamination or old fuel) in a boat we will help remove it. Providing the boat is either on land, or moored close enough to a car parking bay we will be able to gain access to the storage and drain out the contaminated fuel. We've done many fuel drains at piers and boatyards nationwide.

Water Contamination or AdBlue Contamination

Water contaminated fuel, whether it is unleaded petrol or diesel, is definitely a serious situation to deal with in an automobile - especially in present-day common-rail engines.

Having water or AdBlue in the petrol or diesel may produce idling difficulties, uneven running, excessive smoke and, if it is not remedied properly, quite possibly ruined injectors. Having water in petrol is less difficult to drain compared to water in diesel - largely because diesel is an oil. Having said that we can deal with both situations rather easily.

Be aware though that whenever the vehicle has been started with the water contamination it will probably require a new fuel filter to be installed since the previous one is going to be completely water-logged and useless.

Ahhh, that was a quality night of sleep! 7:00 am on a warm Monday and I was on the way to assist an old woman who had put the wrong fuel in her diesel partner's Peugeot 309 in The Grove. I had been told she drove away from the petrol station forecourt and was broken down on a rural road en route to see her family. I plugged the location into the Satnav and got there in less than an hour or so. I turned up at the vehicle and removed the contaminated fuel from the vehicle. As I was doing the work she told me, "I'm getting rather absent-minded in my senior years and did not remember about the vehicle taking diesel seeing that I had only just purchased it a couple of days back right after my former one, which I had had for more than thirty years, inevitably died on me". I got the drain completed and she gifted me a Murray mint and said thanks a lot. Such a pleasant Hertfordshire lady!

Wrong Fuel Assist The Grove - Wrong Fuel in Car The Grove

I had appreciated a wonderful afternoon cycling on the weekend and was feeling pleased with myself the next morning as I was en route to help a new family who were away in The Grove. They pulled over after filling diesel in their metallic green BMW X3, and they were approximately half an hour away. I turned up at their car and smiled to myself as I heard to the gal telling her spouse off for being so daft. "How could you actually find a way to put the wrong fuel in the vehicle?" she said to him. I attempted to clarify that this takes place quite frequently in Hertfordshire and that it's truly nothing to worry about, nevertheless he in spite of everything got his ear bent by his wife. I felt genuine sympathy for the guy. Anyway, I removed the contaminated fuel, gave the engine a flush and filled them up with the right fuel. While watching them drive down the road I waved goodbye and wondered what her indoors would tell me in the event that I made the same mistake... I'd personally never ever live it down!

How to find out if I put the wrong fuel in my car?

If you’ve just filled up at a petrol station and the cars starts to act a bit strange you might start to wonder if you accidentally put the wrong fuel in it.

Well, there are a few things to can check that will be able to tell you:

  1. How is the car responding? There are some very common misfuel symptoms which can be a good indicator of wrong fuel:
    • Loss of engine power – can feel like the car has run out of fuel
    • A lot of smoke (more than usual)
    • Engine coughing or starting to splutter
    • Won’t start – or keeps stalling.
  2. Look at your fuel receipt. It will state clearly if you filled up with diesel or unleaded. If you don’t have the receipt, you can often return to the petrol station where you filled up and give them the date and time (and pump) where you refueled and they will often be able to give you a VAT receipt.
  3. Smell it. Diesel and petrol have very distinctly different smells. Anyone familiar with the motor industry should be able to help you with this. Or you could even get another car to park alongside and smell the fuel caps of both, comparing them to determine what the fuel type is.
  4. Call us to come out and assess the car. In the majority of cases we will be able to tell if the car has been misfueled before beginning work on it. If we discover that the vehicle does not need a fuel drain, you will only be charged a call-out fee.
